February 2024

It has been a busy few months for club member Gabriela Tankel.
In that time she has managed to maintain her 100% record playing for Hertfordshire in the County Championships as well as beating the England No 12 (on rating points countback) and the no 1 Polish woman playing in England  Ewelina Sychta.
Her run of good form continued as she took the Cippenham Open Women's title in January beating England Ranked Ridhi Rohit in a thrilling five setter which Gabriela won 12-10 in the fifth set.
This series of fantastic performances sees Gabriela enter the England Women's Senior Ranking list for February at number 20.
The club wishes "Gabby" as she is known all the very best and hopes that she will continue her great run of success.

Below is a photo of Club star Gabriela on her way to winning the Women's Open Singles at Cippenham.

SUNDAY 6th APRIL SHEFFIELD WOMENS OPEN

Alas no silverware for Gabby on this occasion. The day did not begin well as she was beaten in the groups of the Band 1 competition by Nottingham's Kerry Harvey who played well above her England No 54 ranking. This put Gabby through as group R/U and into the more difficult half of the draw. The loss certainly shook Gabby up as she then first defeated Emily Shone and in the quarter finals an inspired performance against the England No 2 veteran Joanne Keighley a match Gabby won 3-2. A semi final match then awaited with the number 1 seed and England No 15 Bethany O'Connell from Lancashire. An outstanding performance from Gabby saw the match poised at 2-2 and 9-9 before just losing out 11-9.

The open event in the afternoon saw Gabby take revenge for her morning defeat as she beat Kerry Harvey 3-1 on her way to another semi final this time against another top veteran in Janet Adams (England No 4). Unfortunately, there was to  be no repeat of the mornings good work as Gabby crashed out to Janet in straight sets without ever being able to find an answer to Janet's awesome hitting power.

NOTTINGHAM WOMENS 1*

No problems in the earlier stages for Gabby her toughest match being against Amber Zygadlo the former England No 34 now making a comeback after a number of years away from the game. However a real shock came later as Gabby went down 3-2 to an inspired performance from Poland's Monika Tomaszak. However she still made the cut and managing to avoid Monika and finally took her place in the semis where she met and defeated England junior Chloe Evans who had won the U/21 competition in the morning. This set up a final against Gabby's big rival Ewelina Sychta .This was their fifth meeting in four months with the score at two wins apiece. Unfortunately on this occasion Gabby was unable to contain the big hitting Polish player and went down 3-0 having to be content on the day with the R/Up spot.
