There was a very high standard of play across certainly the top 4 divisions (there were 6 in total) but even players in the bottom division knew how to play.
Our A -Team was in the top division and needless to say there were no easy matches!
Round 1 - Graham Spicer ( LOST 6-3)
1st match against a side with a player with pimples on the forehand and penhold grip - not a fun combination to play against was the general consensus among our team. Each of our team won 1 of their 3 games. Veli was especially unlucky losing 2 of his in 5 sets and Meth had two more 5 set games in this match and lost one but did win the other.
Round 2 - Kingfisher A ( WIN 5-4)
In the 2nd match of the day they had a hard fought win over Kingfisher (5-4) with 5 of the 9 games going to 5 sets. Meth was involved in 3 of these 5-setters and came out on top in 2 of them. George was unlucky to lose his one 5 set match but did manage to win 1 of his other 2 games.
Veli (who has barely picked up a bat in 2 years) put in a spirited effort and won his 5 setter 16-14 in the 5th.
Round 3 - Ashford A ( LOST 6-3)
Final match of the day was against the top team from Ashford TTC ( who were the clear winners in this division. This is a club with no fewer than 4 coaches I learned from tournament referee (Mark Roper)
4 more 5 setters in this one and Meth managed to come out the victor in 1 of these while George was unlucky and lost both his 5 set matches but did win the remaining one 3-1. Veli lost his 5 setter but as usual went down fighting in all his matches sadly this time with no reward though.
The 3 points in the final match secured their 3rd place finish and ensured their position in the top division for Day 2. Not a bad result for a team with only 3 players after Heidi sadly was ruled out of action due to a positive Covid test only 1 week before the event.
As usual with all the 5 set matches, our A-team were the last matches to take place and we finished the day around 17:15.
